The Mother Sauce: The Traditional White Sauce

The Mother Sauce:
The Traditional White Sauce

In traditional cooking, the white sauce is a base sauce which other complex sauces are made from.  As long as you know how to make the white sauce, you can create hundreds of other unique sauces.

2 tablespoons of flour
2 tablespoons of butter
2 cups of milk
a pinch of salt

In a medium saucepan, add the flour and butter. Cook and stir until the mixture is tan in color.  Add the milk and salt.  Bring the mixture to a boil and allow it to thicken.  Take the sauce pan off the heat when the sauce is of the desired thickness.
